It was a hard conversation to have, but it felt okay. And that's hurt me, a number of times: where relationships haven't worked out, because I've gotten too distanced, or people I liked (who liked me, too) in college or in the real world stopped talking to me because they thought I was weird and vapid and always wanted to talk around things but not actually about them. It's prevented me from ever really having a serious conversation with a girl I've loved. There is no gain without pain – and dating is no different in this than any other human activity. But we can never be liked and loved by everyone we meet.You simply can’t shield yourself from every possible hurt because you will be automatically shielding yourself from truly living too.
